For several kids like Miah that day was a regular day when they left for school with bags packed with books and notes and lunch boxes. Few of these innocent ones did not even know that they would not be coming back to the warm hugs of their moms and dads.
On May 24, 2022 18 year old Salvador Ramos, an ex-student of Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, United States entered the school premises and shot nineteen students, two teachers. Before that he had shot his grandmother at her place.
Sharing an emotional testimony to Congress, Miah, a survivor of the mass shooting, recalls how she smeared herself with the blood of her friend who was hiding just next to her and was shot to death by the shooter.
“He was in the hallway”….”and we went to go hide behind my teacher’s desk and behind the backpacks,” says Miah in a trembling voice.
“He shot my teacher on the head and told her goodnight. and then he shot some of my classmates and to the whiteboard,” remembers the 11 year old.
“I covered myself with my friend’s blood”
“When I went to the backpacks he shot my friend that was next to me, and I though he was going to come back to the room,” says Miah. With a shaking voice she goes on to say, “so I got her blood and I put it all over me”.
She then got her teacher’s phone and dialed 911 and asked for help.
“I don’t feel safe at school”
When asked if she feels safe at school, Miah nods her head in disagreement.
She feels that this incident might happen again.
On this horrific incident, her father who has been shaken to the core, says in tearful eyes and voice choking with emotions, “I could have lost my baby girl”.
He goes on to say how that incident has changed everything with her. “She is not the same little girl that I used to play with, hang around with and do everything because she was daddy’s little girl.”
“I want things to change for every kid, as schools are not safe anymore. Something needs to really change” he says at last.
