Thanks for tuning into Sportstar’s LIVE coverage of the IPL 2022 match between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders from the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.
|RESULT: KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS BEATS MUMBAI INDIANS BY 52 RUNS|
With this win, Kolkata Knight Riders climbs up from ninth to seventh on the points table.
MI 113 all out in 17.3 overs: OUT!!! Slower ball from Russell, Pollard top-edges it and Sheldon Jackson drops the catch. However, presence of mind comes to KKR’s rescue as they run out Bumrah. OUT!!! That’s it. Another run out as Meredith is miles away from the crease. KKR wins the match by 52 runs and keeps its playoff hopes alive!.
MI 112/8 in 17 overs: Cummins, who has figures of 3-17, is back to complete his quota and perhaps finish this match as well. WIDE!! Pitches it short and the ball goes way over Kumar Kartikeya’s head. Appeal for a run-out at the non-striker’s end after a direct throw from mid-on but Kartikeya is safely in. RUN OUT! Two balls later, the run out has happened. Kartikeya played it behind square leg and in a bid to give Pollard strike, went for a non-existent second run.
Strategic time out. MI needs 59 off 24. Even though Pollard has struggled throughout the season, Shreyas Iyer would not want to think this tie is over till the big man is there.
MI 107/7 in 16 overs: Just five off Southee’s over.
MI 102/7 in 15 overs: OUT!!! Cummins gets Kishan and that could probably be the match. Cummins pitches it short, Kishan looks to pull it but perhaps gets beaten for pace and the top edge has carried to Rinku Singh at fine leg who has held onto a nice catch. OUT!!! Pat Cummins 2-0 Daniel Sams. Cummins had smashed Sams with the bat earlier in the season for an incredible KKR win and today, he has dismissed him when MI might have looked towards Sams for similar stuff. Short and fast from the Australian Test captain gets a top edge from Sams and Jackson takes a simple catch. OUT!!! Short and fast again from the pacer, Murugan Ashwin upper cuts it only to find Chakaravarthy at third man.
MI 100/4 in 14 overs: SIX!!! Much-needed release shot for Kishan who has looked a bit scrappy today. He got under the ball from Narine and managed to just clear the fielder at deep mid-wicket. FIFTY!!! Kishan plays it safely to long-on to reach the milestone. DROP!!! Pollard had hit the ball hard but still, a fielder of Shreyas Iyer’s quality should have held onto the chance at mid-wicket.
MI 90/4 in 13 overs: OUT!!! Chakaravarthy gets the big scalp of Tim David. Flighted delivery, David goes for the big hit but the ball hits a bit too high on the bit and therefore, he gets the elevation but not the distance. Easy catch for Rahane in the deep. SIX!!! Pollard makes room for himself and then whacks it over long on.
MI 83/3 in 12 overs: Looks like Mumbai just wants to play out Narine without losing any wickets. His third over goes for two runs.
MI 81/3 in 11 overs: OUT!!! Russell picks another. Slower ball, Ramandeep tries to heave it over the leg side but gets a top edge and it is a simple catch for Nitish Rana at backward point. End of a painful innings for the youngster. FOUR!!! Attempted short ball from Russell to welcome Tim David but he gets on top of the ball and pulls it swiftly. FOUR!!! Down the ground and it is another boundary for the Singaporean. FOUR!!!! Make that three fours in a row. What a way to begin your innings!
Russell is back for his second over.
MI 66/2 in 10 overs: Venkatesh Iyer comes into the attack. He will take pace off the ball. 8 off the over including a four off a full toss by Ishan Kishan.
MI 58/2 in 9 overs: Varun to Ramandeep Singh, single first ball. Seven off the over in the end. Varun: 2-0-15-0. Mumbai need 108 runs in 66 balls.
MI 51/2 in 8 overs: Narine continues. Five singles including a leg bye. KKR spinners keeping the lid on the scoring rate for now. Narine: 2-0-9-0.
MI 46/2 in 7 overs: Varun Chakravarthy comes into the attack. Varun to Ramandeep Singh, 1 run. Ishan and Ramandeep pinch a single each off the next two before Ishan drives the fifth ball through covers for four. 2 to finish.
MI 37/2 in 6 overs: Sunil Narine into the attack. Ramandeep Singh joins Ishan. Five singles off that over. Tidy start.
MI 32/2 in 5 overs: Andre Russell comes into the attack. Just 2 off the first three balls before Tilak top edges an attempted cut over the keeper for four. GONE! Tilak Varma perishes, caught at slip!
MI 26/1 in 4 overs: Cummins continues to leak runs. Ishan Kishan starts the over with a gorgeous straight drive for four. He collects a brace each off the last two balls. 10 off the over. Mumbai need 140 runs in 96 balls.
MI 16/1 in 3 overs: Southee to continue. Three dot balls followed by a slash from Ishan Kishan that flies over the cordon for four. Still a good over. Just 5 from it.
MI 11/1 in 2 overs: Pat Cummins to share the new ball. Tilak Varma in at 3. Meanwhile, Kishan is off the mark with an off drive for four. Single to finish. 9 from the over including 4 leg byes.
MI 2/1 in 1 over: Southee with the new ball. Rohit and Ishan to open the batting. If KKR lose, they will be out of contention for the playoffs. KKR have reviewed a caught behind decision off the last ball. Rohit the man on strike. Good grab by Sheldon Jackson behind the stumps. There’s a clear spike as the ball passes the bat. Rohit departs!
|TARGET: MUMBAI INDIANS NEEDS 166 RUNS TO WIN|
KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS INNINGS
KKR 165/9 in 20 overs: Five dot balls as Rinku refuses to take a single and give number eleven Varun Chakaravarthy the strike. Last ball. A yorker to finish things off and finally, Rinku takes the single as the ball goes only as far as mid-off.
Bumrah to bowl the final over of the innings. Can he break Alzarri Joseph’s record of the best IPL figures of 6-12?
KKR 164/9 in 19 overs: SIX! First runs in the last nine balls for KKR as Rinku blasts one from Sams over mid-wicket. WIDE!!! That six surely has unsettled Sams a bit as he concedes an extra. OUT!!! Southee provides catching practice to Kieron Pollard at long on. KKR nine-down.
KKR 156/8 in 18 overs: OUT!!! Stunning catch from Daniel Sams as Sheldon Jackson tries to hoick one but since the ball was not short enough, he only manages to find the top edge. Third wicket for Bumrah. OUT!!! Fourth wicket for Bumrah as his slower one deceives Pat Cummins who was too early into the shot. The ball goes only as far as Tilak Verma. OUT!!! Bumrah pitches one short, Sunil Narine is unable to get in any sort of position to play it, top edge and Bumrah takes a brilliant catch in his follow-through. Five-wicket haul for Bumrah. Southee defends the hat-trick ball comfortably. Final ball and Bumrah beats the outside edge of Southee’s bat. Triple-wicket maiden – sensational stuff from Boom Boom Bumrah who currently has figures of 3-1-9-5!
KKR 156/5 in 17 overs: FOUR!!! Down the leg side from Meredith, Rinku gets the faintest of the contacts but it is enough to go past a diving Kishan behind the stumps. FOUR!!! Slightly short from the Aussie, Rinku moves to off and pulls it for a boundary at backward square leg. Thirteen off the over.
Meredith to bowl his third over.
KKR 143/5 in 16 overs: Nicely done by Ashwin. Concedes just three off his final over.
Murugan Ashwin back to finish his spell. Figures of 3 -0-32-1 so far.
KKR 140/5 in 15 overs: Bumrah to DreRuss and he starts off with a magnificent yorker. OUT!! Bumrah lands one short, Russell goes for the pull only to top edge it and his compatriot Pollard takes a simple catch at long on. After a few wicketless games, Bumrah finally gets a scalp. Some misunderstanding between new batter Rinku and Rana as Rana almost gets run out at the non-striker’s end while completing the second run. OUT!!! Another bouncer from Bumrah, Rana gets his head out of the way but Mumbai appeals for a caught behind. Umpires rules in the batter’s favour but the decision is overturned following a successful DRS by MI in which the UltraEdge clearly showed a spike as the ball passed the gloves. Great over from Bumrah – just four off it and two huge wickets of Russell and Rana.
KKR 136/3 in 14 overs: OUT!!! Ashwin manages to find Iyer’s outside edge to give Mumbai a much needed breakthrough. Andre Russell comes in and straight away skies one. However, it falls in no man’s land on the off side and he takes a couple. SIX!!! Brute force by the West Indian helps the ball sail over Tim David at long on despite the bat turning in his hands. FOUR!! Ashwin misses his line again, sends one on the pads and Nitish Rana sweeps it hard beating the fielder at backward square leg.
Final strategic timeout of this innings. KKR on the charge!
KKR 123/2 in 13 overs: SIX!!! Nitish Rana bludgeons it over covers. WIDE!!! Nitish Rana tries his best to get some bat on it but the ball was way out of his reach. FOUR!!! Nitish Rana is loving it! Another four through the covers. SIX!!! Rana is shifting gears here. Maximum over mid-wicket. Twenty six off Pollard’s two overs.
Pollard back for his second over.
KKR 106/2 in 12 overs: Meredith starts his second over with three dots before Iyer pulls one to fine leg for a single. FOUR!! Short and wide and Iyer slams it through covers for a boundary.
KKR 100/2 in 11 overs: OUT!!! Rahane tried a reverse sweep on the first ball and missed it. He goes for it again, misses it again and this time the ball turns in and hits the off-stump. Second wicket for Kartikeya as he dismissed Rahane on 25. Shreyas Iyer is the new batter and he is off the mark with a single on the leg side on his second ball. SIX!!! Flighted delivery from the left-armer and Nitish Rana smacks it over his head. SIX!!! This time Rana goes over long-on. What looked like a decent over has turned into an expensive one with those two big hits.
KKR 87/1 in 10 overs: FOUR!!! Gentle medium pace of Pollard along with width on the off side and Rahane has no hesitation in finding the gap between short third man and point for four. Five singles off the remaining five balls.
It is time for the first strategic time out. Knight Riders must be pleased with the way they started but Mumbai has pulled things back by giving just 15 runs off three overs post the PowerPlay.
KKR 78/1 in 9 overs: Rahane plays it in the deep-midwicket region for a single. Nitish Rana tries another reverse sweep and gets the under edge which goes through Kishan’s leg. The KKR batters steal a single while the MI keeper wonders where the ball is. Kartikeya sends one wide, Rahane tries to reach it and misses. Kishan dislodges the bails and appeals for stumping but the replay shows that Rahane was safe. Just three off Kartikeya’s second over.
KKR 75/1 in 8 overs: FOUR! Ashwin bowls one down the leg side and Rahane gladly accepts the gift sweeping it for four. Nitish Rana tries a reverse sweep and Ishan Kishan appeals for a caught behind. Rohit is not convinced and does not go for DRS. Seven off the over.
After an expensive first over, Murugan Ashwin is back for another.
KKR 68/1 in 7 overs: Rahane scoops it towards wide-long on for a single. Nitish Rana plays nicely off the pads and the quick outfield means that the fine leg fielder has to dive to save the ball from reaching the boundary rope. WIDE! Sams sprays one down the leg side. A similar delivery, Nitish Rana tries to pull but the ball does not bounce enough. Tidy over from Sams
Third over for Sams.
KKR 64/1 in 6 overs: FOUR!! Fifty comes up for the Knight Riders as Venkatesh Iyer tries to smack it and gets a top edge to get a boundary at third man. Misfielding at covers allows KKR openers to steal two when there should have been no run. SIX!!! Venkatesh Iyer gets down on one knee and hits it way over deep mid-wicket. OUT!!! Kartiekya has the last laugh as he spins one across and Venkatesh Iyer’s top edge carries easily to Rohit Sharma. The left hander departs for an explosive 24-ball 43. FOUR!! A juicy full toss and Nitish Rana drives it through covers. This is KKR’s best powerplay score this season.
Last over of the Powerplay and left-arm spinner Kumar Kartikeya will bowl it.
KKR 48/0 in 5 over: FOUR! Venkatesh Iyer steps out and lifts it over covers for another boundary. SIX!!! Nice improvisation from the left-hander as he moves to the off-side and scoops Meredith for a maximum. FIVE WIDES!!! Expensive first over from the Aussie pacer. This one bounces way too much and goes over keeper Kishan’s head. MISS!! Excellent fielding from big Kieron Pollard at mid-wicket who got down quickly and threw the ball at the non-striker’s end, missing the stumps by a whisker. Venkatesh survives.
Meredith replaces Sams.
KKR 31/0 in 4 overs: FOUR! Bumrah provides width with his first ball and Rahane cuts it expertly through backward point. Decent recovery from the pacer as he concedes just one from the remaining five deliveries.
No second over for Ashwin. Jasprit Bumrah into the attack.
KKR 26/0 in 3 overs: Sams continues. SIX! Venkatesh has teed off! In the slot from Sams and Venkatesh has launched that over cow corner for what is the 800th six of the tournament. 10 off the over.
KKR 16/0 in 2 overs Rohit introduces Ashwin’s leg-spin in the second over itself. Rahane gently tucks it to off side for one. WIDE! Ashwin sends one down the leg side. SIX!! Ashwin pitches it short, Venkatesh goes on the backfoot and hits it over backward square leg. FOUR! Exquisite drive through the covers by Venkatesh.
KKR 4/0 in 1 over Venkatesh gently plays the first ball to mid off. On the pads and the left-hander flicks it into the gap on the leg side to pick up an easy couple. Short ball from Sams, Venkatesh does not get the contact he would have like but still, Murugan Ashwin certainly saved a few runs at short fine leg with a brilliant dive. Rahane finishes the over with a cut to point taking a single.
Venkatesh Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane will open the innings for KKR. Mumbai has given the new ball to Daniel Sams.

Kolkata Knight Riders was flourishing and Mumbai Indians floundering the last time the two teams crossed paths in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Now the tables have turned; Rohit Sharma & Co. have started to find their feet at last while the Knight Riders are going through a slump in form.
In the race to make it to the playoffs, the Knight Riders have more to lose in the contest at the DY Patil Stadium here on Monday as five-time champion Mumbai has already been knocked out.
Coming into this game on the back of two wins on the trot, Mumbai Indians will be the more confident outfit. Rohit and Ishan Kishan, the two heavyweights in the batting line-up, are starting to find their touch. Kishan, the costliest purchase in this IPL auction, seems to have overcome his lean patch after a bright start to the season.
The bowling hasn’t been outstanding but the bowlers – in particular Daniel Sams – are thriving on a nothing-to-lose mentality. Much will be expected of spinners M. Ashwin and Kumar Kartikeya at a venue becoming known for low or middling scores.
The Knight Riders are well served by their bowlers, Umesh Yadav and Sunil Narine in particular performing their roles well. But their struggles in the top order are resulting in big defeats. The top order unravelled spectacularly against Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday, and the team management will hope batters give a better account of themselves during the Powerplay.
