CWG 2022: Para-powerlifter Sudhir and long-jumper Murali Sreeshankar’s historic feats add to India’s medals tally on Day 7 | Commonwealth Games 2022 News – Times of India

BIRMINGHAM: It was another historic day for India at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 on Thursday, this time headlined by para-powerlifter Sudhir‘s gold medal and long-jumper Murali Sreeshankar‘s silver.
So far, India has won 20 medals– six gold, seven silver and seven bronze — and was at the seventh position on the medals tally at the end of Day 7 of the competition here.
Sreeshankar clinched the silver medal in the men’s long jump final with a mark of 8.08m, becoming the first Indian male athlete to win a Commonwealth Games medal in long jump. The other Indian finalist in the event, Muhammed Aneesh Yahiya, finished fifth with a best jump of 7.97m.

Para-powerlifter Sudhir won India’s first gold in the event at the Commonwealth Games. He pushed Nigeria’s Ikechukwu Obichukwu (133.6 points) to the second spot by 0.9 points as the Indian lifter’s final score read a Games Record 134.5 points for the top place on the podium in men’s heavyweight division.
Also, the Indian boxing contingent assured the country of more medals by winning their respective quarterfinal bouts. Amit Panghal, Jaismine, Sagar and Rohit Tokas all advanced to the last-four stage of the competition.
The Indian men’s hockey team also stormed into the semifinals after defeating Wales 4-1, while ace sprinter Hima Das qualified for the women’s 200m semis by finishing on top in Heat 2 of the track event.

The shuttlers began their singles campaign in impressive fashion with double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, Lakshya Sen and Aakarshi Kashyap winning their respective Round-of-32 matches with ease. However, the mixed doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and B Sumeeth Reddy lost to bow out.
Defending table tennis singles champion Manika Batra and her teammates Reeth Tennison and Sreeja Akula opened their singles campaign with facile victories. In the doubles section as well the top Indian pairs faced little difficulty, with Manika and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran swiftly advancing to the mixed doubles Round of 16, as did Sathiyan and Achanta Sharath Kamal along with Harmeet Desai and Sanil Shetty in men’s doubles.
In para-TT draw, Bhavina Patel, Sonalben Patel and Raj Alagar won their respective opening matches in the singles competition.
India’s experienced squash player Dipika Pallikal was in the spotlight for the first time at the Games and emerged victorious in both the women’s doubles and mixed doubles matches, partnering Joshana Chinappa and Saurav Ghosal respectively, to move in into the quarterfinals in both the categories.
